Decorating a child's room with some canvas wall art and cool furniture is fun and exciting especially for the child. As a parent you might get carried away with your own ideas about how to decorate your child's bedroom that you forget to ask your kid for his or her own designing ideas. It is also important to keep in mind things like your budget, your child's own tastes, the color theme and concept, and about long-term goals.

You can decorate your child's bedroom with bright colors, fantasy themes, sports themes, fairy themes, and lots of storage spaces like shelves and cabinets. But instead of getting all worked up and shopping for decor pieces and furniture on impulse, you should consider the long-term effects and costs of your decorating ideas.

If you do not want to keep redecorating and spending money each time you want to change the theme of your kid's room, then take these guidelines as a way to decorate on the cheap. If you design your child's bedroom wisely, you can afford to redecorate every 5 to 8 years. Focus on decor items that won't cost too much like canvas wall art, shades for the lamps, and small decor pieces.

DO make a lot of storage space for clothes, toys and books that are built-in ie standard sized so your child can use them till he reaches his teens or even adulthood. You can just use brightly colored paint on them that can also be changed every several years.

DO furnish with durable items like standard sized beds. Bed frames should last till your child reaches his teens even if you have to replace the mattress or foam. It can be cute to decorate with pint-sized beds but if you want to be practical and save money, use standard sized beds with colorfully painted bed frames. Getting small beds require you to keep changing the bed frame every few years as your child grows taller.

DO decorate with canvas wall art with pictures of playful looking flowers for a girl's room or planets and stars for a boy's bedroom. Coordinate the color of your paintings and artwork to the color theme of the bedroom, walls and other decor pieces like curtains, lamp shades, and the carpet. There are cheap but good-looking artwork that you can replace as your child grows older and prefers wall decor that is more age appropriate.

DO use small and affordable decor like baseball gloves, small footballs, dolls and stuffed animals. The shades on the lamps can be changed to suit the general theme of your room. The lampshades can also be changed every few years even if you keep the same floor or table lamp.

DO paint the walls with your child;s favorite color. Although bright colors like red, yellow and orange are cool wall colors in a kid's room, they can also be distracting and energizing. If your child is naturally hyper active, try to use calm colors like blue or green.

DON'T make small furniture built-in. This will make it difficult and expensive to replace as your kid grows taller when he will need taller chairs and tables. If you do have to decorate with miniature furniture, use stand-alone pieces, and avoid having them built into the walls.

DON'T overspend. Choose your decor pieces wisely with budget in mind. Things like canvas wall art, small cheap decor pieces, and color themes can achieve the concept you want without costing too much. Spending less for decorating a child's room will allow you to redecorate more often.

DON'T do all the work and planning. Get decor ideas from your child. This will boost your kid's self-esteem, creativity and love for his or her own bedroom. Designing and decorating with your child will also form good memories. It's a great way to bond with your children.
