When deciding to re-do a small room into the haven for a growing teen, you might benefit from knowing five tips to use as interior design ideas before you spend any money.

Tip #1: Choose one piece of furniture or accessory as a focal point for the room.

When you're decorating a teen's room, try to imagine what will be the first thing you see from the doorway when you enter the room; that's what becomes the focal point.

Deciding what it is that will be the focal point in the small bedroom will help to divert the eye to look at something across the room; thus giving the room a larger feel to the space.

Tip #2: Minimize the amount of furniture you place in a small bedroom.

Not only is there floor space to work with, but you have four walls and a ceiling that can be considered when designing a small space. When choosing a bed, the room will appear larger if you just put the mattress on a bed frame. Above the bed you can put shelves up for storage, and you can mount a couple of light fixtures to the walls for direct or ambient lighting. That will eliminate the need for a nightstand to put the lamp on.

You can add a small table which will double as a desk, make-up table (if your teen is a girl), and it can also have drawers and storage for books, and various pieces of clothing.

Tip #3: Put the bed on wooden blocks for height

For a small amount of money, you can buy wooden blocks that the legs of the bed fit into. Not only will the bed be four to six inches taller, but now you'll have a massive amount of space under the bed where you can place items into plastic covered containers to store out of sight. A long bed skirt will hide the storage tubs.

Tip #4: Choose a decorative theme for the room

Even if you only choose a few colors that are appealing to the teen, you will be creating a sacred space that he or she will want to spend time in. It's especially helpful to select a minimalist theme when designing the room to make it appealing to everyone who enters.

Tip #5: Plan a room design that your teen can grow into

One final decorating idea is to plan ahead so that the room's colors, furniture and style will be appropriate for several years, as the young teen grows into becoming a young adult. Remember that a teen's room is important to you and your teen, especially when it comes to experimenting with your interior design ideas.
