The following ideas can be used to create the illusion of more space in your small bedroom.
1. Lighten the room.
If the room is too dark, it will seem closed-in and small. Light and brightly colored walls are more reflective than darker walls. The lighter the color, the more open the space appears. This does not mean you have to live with white walls. There are a wide range of light colored paints available.
Once you've chosen the wall color, choose the trim and molding colors. Paint your trim and molding in either the same hue as the walls, or a lighter color. Lighter objects appear closer while darker or shadowed objects appear further away. When the trim and molding are a lighter color, the wall appears further back, thus making the room appear bigger.
Whatever the wall color, paint the ceiling white to maximize brightness.
By choosing furniture that has a light color, it will have the same effect as the light colors of the walls.
To further lighten the room, extend the curtain rods beyond the window frames; this allows in more light and draws the eye outward. Another trick is to have the curtains or blinds blend into the wall color. Blending items into a room can also add size to the area being decorated.
2. Avoiding clutter.
A good rule of thumb when decorating a small bedroom is, the more floorspace you see, the larger your room will look. Clutter is bad, especially in modest spaces.
Keep items off the floor.
You may want to take care to design in sufficient storage space so you can properly put items away, since clutter will make even a big bedroom seem tiny. Create some drawers or use baskets to utilize wasted space under a bed.
Put high shelves on the wall(s) so that items can be stored out of the way without taking up floorspace.
Put the bed along one wall instead of in the middle of the room. By leaving more unbroken space, you will create more freedom of movement.
Avoiding clutter involves more than keeping clothes put away, dresser tops clear, and shelves/bedside tables neat. Be sure to consider furniture and floorspace. Does the room really need that extra lamp or chair? Could the bed itself be a size smaller? Does the bed require quite so many pillows or stuffed animals? The more bed-space open to the eye and floorspace open for physical movement, the larger the room will feel.
Floorspace can appear crowded just by using dark colors, multiple scatter rugs, or lining shoes along the baseboard. A bare wood or tile floor creates an illusion of greater space as does keeping that floorspace swept clean. Carpeting, too, must be frequently vacuumed and free of visible dirt. Also, lighter color carpeting makes a room appear larger than the same space carpeted in dark colors.
3. Create reflections.
Finally, make the bedroom look larger by expanding the walls. Not literally. Wall mirrors give the illusion of creating more space in a small room. You are able to increase the illusion if you have the mirror capture the light from a window opening or a door opening into a hallway.
New mirrors are pricey, so cruise flea markets and garage sales for bargains. Even mirrors with surface imperfections can give your room a great atmosphere.
